In addition to having one of our guides take you out on to the flats, fisherman at Mango Creek also have the unique option of using one of our brand new Hobie kayaks to head off by themselves to fish for the day. These sleek crafts are custom designed for casting and trolling, allowing maximum comfort and versatility while you are on the water. In fact, these kayaks allow access into areas that can't be reached by foot or by boat.

On your own, you can fish at your own pace- as hard or relaxed as you like. Of all the features of these boats, the revolutionary pedal system that Hobie has designed for these kayaks makes it possible for a fisherman to drive and steer the boat while leaving their hands free to make casts or reel in a fish. Plus, the speed the boat moves while being pedaled is perfect for trolling. We've had enormous luck catching barracuda just off the edge of the shore at Mango Creek in the kayaks.

The kayaks are also surprisingly stable, allowing fly fisherman to make a good, long cast while sitting down. The mangrove shoreline of much of the east end of the island is great snook and tarpon habitat, and the stealth and low profile of the kayak allows anglers to get into a great position to cast to fish without spooking them.

There is plenty of space on top of the boats to store anything you'd like to bring along, and there is storage space underneath the deck as well were you can safely store things in a dry bag. Use the bungy to strap your paddle to the side of the boat while you are pedaling, and steer the boat with the flip down rudder to keep yourself going straight.

If you'd like to head out, you can be dropped off with your kayak- loaded with water and a sandwich in a small cooler, and whatever fishing gear you may need- and you can go after these fish while pedaling up and down the mangrove canals where you'll be fishing by yourself and to fish who get very little fishing pressure. It is an exciting new way to fish at Mango Creek and we are happy to now be able to offer it to our guests.

Because those fisherman who will be using the kayaks will be by themselves, we ask that they please not do any fishing on the flats. Since the kayaks are great for trolling in open water or for fishing in the many mangroves, we are trying to keep as much pressure off of the flats as we can in order to protect all aspects of our fishery. However, in the end, the kayaks are the best way to enjoy some remote and beautiful spots on the island, while at the same time being able to catch some great fish.

See the "Kayaking" page on the Eco-adventures section of the page for specs on the kayaks as well as maps that show different areas of the island that are great for kayaking.
