Mango Creek Lodge Fishing Calendar
Mango Creek
Lodge offers saltwater fly
fishing and spin fishing
year-round. However, the
time of
year and
tide and moon phases can
affect your fishing experience.
Learn more about each of these
factors before planning your
trip.
The most
important factors to consider when
planning your fishing trip to Mango
Creek Lodge are the phases of the
tides and moon. You should try to
plan your trip for a time period
when the incoming tides correspond
to your schedule. (For example, when
the tide is low in the early morning
and begins coming in around 7 or 8
a.m., it is a fine time to be out on
the flats.) Our guides also believe
that the best time of month to fish
for bonefish and permit is under a
new moon. Inversely, they believe
the full moon can make fishing more
challenging.
Mobile
Geographics offers a great
combination calendar for
Port Royal
that you can use to plan your trip.
After tide and
moon phases, weather is likely to
have the strongest influence on the
success of your fishing trip.
However, it is also the most
difficult to predict. In general,
Roatan has typical weather patterns
that can help you plan.
January
and February
Roatan’s weather
is typically lovely and mild in
January and February. It is usually
warm during the day and cool at
night, with occasional rain showers.
Cold fronts called “northers”
sometimes wander down from the United States,
but they normally create only
scattered showers or intermittent
rainy days.
March,
April, and May
The spring
months are some of Roatan’s best.
The weather is usually very settled
with little rain. It is often
breezy, so practice casting with and
across the wind before your trip.
During this period, permit begin
gathering for spawning, and there is
a lot of activity on the flats. You
will likely have good opportunities
to catch not only permit
and bonefish but also tarpon, snook,
jacks, and others.
June,
July, and August
During the summer
months, there is usually a mix of
afternoon thunder showers and warm
to hot temperatures. The prevailing
trade winds are lighter, but they
still help keep the island cool.
August has some of the calmest days
in terms of wind, which can make
casting a bit easier for novice fly
fishermen. Bonefish are plentiful,
permit are still on the flats, and
some big tarpon can be found. If you
live in a warm area such as
Florida
or
Texas, the
summer months are an ideal time to
visit and escape the heat and
humidity up north.
September
and October
The early fall
months are usually warm to hot with
rain showers. Fishing in September
is sometimes tricky because of this
month’s very high tides. October is
hurricane season for this part of
the Caribbean
and, although Roatan seldom has a
direct hurricane hit (one every 22
years on average), it sometimes gets
lots of rain from hurricanes to the
north. This does not affect the
fish, but the conditions can be wet
and windy.
November and December
Roatan’s rainy
season starts in November and lasts
through early January, but we
usually still fish because these
tropical rains come hard but for
short periods. November and December
are normally our rainiest time of
year, but the fishing is good. It
often rains only during the night.
